The Seaboard is now leveling the playing field between the “at your fingertips” capability for sound manipulation utilizing pressure sensitivity of many traditional instruments and that of the keyboard. The keys are all black and made entirely of rubber and allow for physical techniques unable to be rendered using a traditional yet limiting keyboard. The continuous “board’ is pressure sensitive allowing the user to manually manipulate volume and timbre as well as effectively emphasize pitch. Furthermore, the device is not limited to default presets for the Seaboard GRAND software allows for custom adjustment of them as well a complete creation of new ones from scratch. Currently, software is Mac-Only, however, a Windows version is in development.
The 88-key GRAND made its debut at the 2013 SXSW Music Accelerator in Austin, Texas where it was demoed and took first prize.
